Angreifer: 22nd MTB 245 83 93 347
Gefechtsbericht A: At 0415 today M.T.B. 245, on patrol with three other M.T.Bs. off Vlieland, made an independent
attack on an enemy convoy without result and sustained extensive damage. One of her ratings was killed and two were slightly wounded.[1]. ->
22nd M.T.B. Flotilla, M.T.B’s 245, 83, 347, and 93 were ordered to position off Vlieland to sweep S.W. for northbound convoy expected to leave Den Helder about 1900. Air R/C reported convoy sailing at 1600. This information was from position 25 miles further east.
Information proved incorrect and resulted in convoy being located very late in the night.
Unit swept west at 12 knots from 05°40' E and located convoy by Radar off Vlieland at 0252.
M.T.B. 83 then ordered to R/V position owing to engine breakdown. Unit steered 260 to clear convoy while plotting course and speed but on turning east 347 and 93 lost touch with S.O. At 0330 S.O. ordered unit to attack independently. This was received as act independently on T.C.S. and 347 and 93 proceeded to R/V position and took no part in action. At 0413 M.T.B. 245 sighted convoy of 8 ships and proceeded to attack third ship.
Just before attack starboard tube was accidently fired by rating losing his balance in heavy sea. At 0424 at range of 600 yards exactor gear failed twice to fire port tube which was eventually fired by S.T. by emergency drill. By this time range was 200 to 300 yards and boat- was swinging to avoid being rammed by trawler 50 yards distant. Torpedo missed and 245 disengaged at high speed.
Casualties: One rating killed and two slightly wounded in 245. M.T.B.245 suffered extensive damage to tank space and engine room. (C. in C. Nore, 011935A to Admty.).
