| Gefechtsbericht A: | Last night, M.T.Bs. carried out a successful torpedo attack on the flak ship DALMATIA (ex-Yugoslav light cruiser DALMACIJA, ex-German NIOBE) aground off Silba Island.[3] - Angriff 298 (Lt. Shore mit SO an Bord) auf 'Niobe' mit 4 Torpedos, von denen 2 trafen, Flakkreuzer 'Niobe' wurde Totalverlust, Parenzo (nicht in Navi Perdute) wurde beiläufig ebenfalls zerstört. Das Abwehrfeuer anwesender Boote richten keinen Schaden an.[1] -> MTB 226 (Lt. Hyslop) and MTB 298 depart Hvar to attack the old German cruiser Niobe (Ex Yugoslav - Dalmatia) reported aground at Arat di Ponente. To attack and return before dawn requires the boats to make 25 kts. MTB 226 has difficulty in keeping up due to leaks in the engine room which necessitate emergency repairs. At 01h00 MTB 226 and MTB 298 are off Silba Island. They sight the cruiser amongst a group of E Boats and tugs and reduce to 2 - 4 kts to make their approach. MTBs fire torpedoes from 400 yds. Niobe is hit, forward and aft, by two torpedoes and the Germans open fire. The forward hit is in a magazine that has been emptied during the salvage operation. The tug Parrenzo, lying alongside the Niobe, is hit by a third torpedo, explodes and sinks. The Niobe is a total loss. MTBs return safely to Hvar. |
