| Footnote : | The British steamer "Nam Yong" left Batavia (Jakarta) on Feb.24th for Fremantle. She was claimed to be sunk on Feb.28th by submarine about 500nm S/ Christmas Is. Master and 4 crew members were taken prisoners of war. The Dutch motor vessel "Modjokerto" (22/8806grt) left Tjilatjap on Feb.28th for Colombo. She was sunk in position 12°30’S / 106°E. "Two radio messages were intercepted, the first at 1:40 a.m. GMT (Feb.28th or Mar.1st ?) reading: AAAA - chased by Japanese plane in position 11°40’S / 107°40’E; the second at 2:02 a.m. GMT was reading: RRRR - chased by unknown warship" (Lloyd's War Losses). According to this information it seems not really probable, that "Modjokerto" was indeed sunk by a submarine. |
