Footnote : I-123 attacked an Allied auxiliary transport, escorted by two destroyers, 40 miles W of Darwin. USS ALDEN (DD-211) and EDSALL were escorting the oiler USS TRINITY (AO.13) to Darwin. They sighted 3 torpedos missing their target. ALDEN carried out a brief depth charge attack, but did not cause any damage to the submarine.
