Footnote : "Sandsend" had been in convoy OB.228. The evening before it sighted an U-Boat overtaking the ship very close on the surface, and pulled out of convoy to put the submarine on it's stern. In doing so it lost the convoy and was trying to catch up with it next morning when it was torpedoed and sunk.
